chinese

There are many things that exasperate me in life, like chinese.

I have nothing against chinese. In fact, I think it's a lovely beautiful language and will be more beautiful if i could actually grasp it, which obviously I can't.

My problem is mainly with the education system. During primary school, we can improve on our chinese because we know that studying the chinese words and how to form sentences with them can actually directly translate into mark increment. But now, however hard you study the textbook, it's not gonna come out in exams so whats the point of studying the textbook? I got A* for PSLE chinese just by studying hard although my chinese isn't good, so maybe their changing the exam format is to find out who really is good at chinese, but by doing that, people like me, and people who suck at chinese cannot learn anything. My foundation is still primary six chinese, but at least I remember the words I learn in P6.

Just because teachers go through the textbook does not mean that students will naturally learn all the words in the textbook, only the chinese-educated students can do that. In fact, I can only list out a handful of words I learnt in secondary school chinese. Yes, by the new format, they want people to read more chinese books and stuff, but if you ask me no one is doing that because they don't see the point of it. Just by reading words that you don't know and understand again and again, does not make you better at chinese.

I also don't like the fact that every single passage must have a moral. It's kinda annoying like they can crap out the most inspirational thing in the world just by one incident.

GAHHH. I waste my time when I go to chinese class. I don't have time and energy when I come back from school to make the conscious effort to work hard at chinese everyday. The educators should know that many students dislike chinese because no matter how we try, we just can't score, so they should teach us smth relevant to the O levels like how to answer comprehension passages.

I should try to like chinese and overcome my language barrier and stop speaking like an ang moh. Heck, angmohs speak better chinese than me.

Work hard, read more. You can do it. Get an A for HCL O lvls and you may never have to touch it again.
That's many of our mentalities right now.
